Kenyan Student Secures Grant to Construct Nightclub Project

Jesse Mugambi, a University of Brighton graduate in architecture currently pursuing a master’s degree in sustainable design, has secured a €50,000 (£39,000) grant from Jägermeister to realize his project, Studio Can-V, in his hometown of Nairobi, Kenya. The initiative involves constructing a nightclub and music studio using decommissioned shipping containers, aiming to address the challenges faced by aspiring musicians in accessing suitable spaces for their craft.

Motivated by his struggles in pursuing a musical passion, Mugambi envisions Studio Can-V as a versatile venue transitioning from a daytime hub for young DJs to a vibrant nightclub at night. The project, conceived during his undergraduate years at the University of Brighton, will be implemented by local artisans, utilizing repurposed shipping containers while incorporating indigenous design elements to celebrate and promote youth cultural identities.

Expressing his vision, Mugambi emphasizes Studio Can-V’s goal of fostering inclusivity by providing a platform for emerging DJs from diverse backgrounds. By foregrounding the voices of these young artists, Mugambi aspires to contribute to creating an egalitarian society through the transformative power of music, dance, and community connection.

The mobile sound studio, a centerpiece of the project, aligns with Mugambi’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement. Local artisans in Nairobi will contribute to the construction, further integrating the project into the region’s cultural fabric.

Jesse Mugambi’s Studio Can-V emerged victorious among 300 submissions from 50 countries in Jägermeister’s Save The Night competition, dedicated to supporting global nightlife projects. Kai Dechsling, the director of worldwide culture and experiential marketing at Mast-Jägermeister, commended Mugambi’s initiative, emphasizing the significance of inclusive, diverse, and safe nightlife as a catalyst for self-expression and creating sanctuaries worldwide.
