Italy will reveal Africa energy cooperation proposal in October

[post_slider]

During her Friday visit to Ethiopia, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that in October the Italian government would present a strategy centered on energy cooperation with Africa.

The “Mattei plan” is named after Enrico Mattei, the inventor of the Italian energy conglomerate Eni, and proposes to transform Italy into a significant energy center for the transportation of natural gas from North Africa and the Mediterranean to the rest of Europe.

Meloni stated that the concept will be debated in October at a conference her country will host with African nations.

She added on RAI public television in Addis Ababa, “I believe this could be the appropriate time to present our Mattei Plan.”

Last year, Algeria and other African nations supplanted Russia as Italy’s primary gas supplier
