Islamic State-linked attackers: Over the weekend, rebels associated with extremists attacked towns in eastern Congo, according to a local official. The raids killed at least 11 people, destroyed vehicles, and looted property.

On Sunday, the mayor revealed that the attacks had occurred on Saturday. For a long time, these insurgents were active in the border region close to Uganda.

Nearly 200 people have died in the region so far this year, according to latest UN data.

The mayor of Mulekera, Ngongo Mayanga, announced that eleven remains had been found in four separate sites inside the commune. The North Kivu province town of Mulekera is close to Beni.

The Eastern Congo has been engulfed in violence for many years. More than 120 armed factions are fighting for different goals, including the ownership of precious natural resources and the protection of their own villages.

Regrettably, insurgents frequently carry out acts of mass murder. The United Nations estimates that over 7 million people have fled their homes as a direct result of the continuing violence.
