Guinea’s Military Dissolves Government, Paving the Way

In a surprising move, military leaders in Guinea have dissolved the government without providing any explanation, according to a statement from Gen. Amara Camara, the president’s secretary general. The announcement, made in a video address on Monday night, revealed the intention to appoint a new government, leaving the country in a state of uncertainty. However, Gen. Camara assured the public that daily business would continue as usual under the deputy secretary generals until the formation of the new government.

Guinea has been under military rule since 2021 when soldiers ousted then-President Alpha Conde. The West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, has consistently called for a swift return to civilian rule. Elections are currently scheduled for 2025, and the international community has been closely monitoring Guinea’s political developments.

Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, chief of staff of the armed forces, declared on Monday that members of the dissolved government must promptly return their vehicles and passports. Additionally, their bodyguards are instructed to end their service, and the ministers’ bank accounts have been frozen. The abrupt dissolution raises questions about the motivations behind the military’s decision and the potential implications for the country’s political future.

Col. Mamadi Doumbouya, the leader of the military regime that took control three years ago, justified the overthrow of President Alpha Conde by claiming to prevent Guinea from descending into chaos. However, critics argue that since assuming power, Doumbouya’s administration has failed to deliver on promises, leading to increased challenges for the citizens.

Political analyst Misbaou Doumbouya expressed concerns about the rising cost of living and the challenging conditions faced by the people, calling on Gen. Mamadi Doumbouya to take responsibility for the situation. The discontent among citizens suggests a growing dissatisfaction with the current military leadership and a desire for stability and effective governance.

As Guinea enters another period of political uncertainty, the international community will likely closely observe the developments and the impact on the country’s path to a democratic and stable government. The dissolution of the government raises questions about the military’s commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of the people and the possibility of a genuine transition to civilian rule in the near future.
