The provincial government has now reversed the decision of the mayor of a town in north-eastern Burundi. They wanted to expel a woman who was accused of taking the mayor’s constituents’ spouses.
Gilbert Ndikumasabo, the mayor of the Butihinda district, reportedly issued an order for the woman to leave the district. He gave her twenty-four hours, and the letter was extensively distributed online.
According to the mayor’s letter, the woman must depart the district of Butihinda on April 7, 2023. He continued that behavior aimed at destroying marriages.
Infidelity and rising divorce rates are currently causing concern in Burundi, which has led to both criticism and support of the mayor’s action on social media.
The woman has not made any public comment
A few hours after the letter was made public, the governor of Muyinga province reversed the mayor’s decision for “not adhering to the law,” the province announced on Twitter.
Recently, the first lady of Burundi issued a public statement condemning infidelity and blaming unmarried women for divorce.
