FAAN, NSA Strategy: Cutting Back on Airport Security Agents for Efficiency

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the National Security Adviser (NSA) office have jointly agreed to address the issue of multiple security checks conducted by military and paramilitary personnel at the country’s international airports.

During a recent press briefing, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director of FAAN, expressed her concern over the excessive practice of inspecting passengers’ belongings. She highlighted that the collaboration between FAAN and the NSA aims to implement short-term and long-term measures to streamline airport security procedures.

Kuku emphasized the need to reduce the number of security agencies involved in routine airport checks, as this often causes passengers inconvenience. She mentioned agencies such as Nigeria Customs, NDLEA, NAQS, and EFCC, which have traditionally conducted checks at airports.

Kuku outlined two key strategies to address this issue. First, a short-term intervention will minimize the presence of unnecessary agencies at airports, focusing on those conducting routine observations rather than active security checks. Second, a long-term solution involves establishing a joint coordination room equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor passengers’ luggage.

CCTV surveillance in coordination rooms will allow security personnel to observe baggage handling areas and identify potential security threats more effectively. This approach aims to improve visibility and security without causing undue disruption to passengers.

Kuku also addressed concerns about passengers’ baggage opening, attributing it to secondary screening requirements imposed by certain countries due to security concerns. She assured that FAAN is actively enhancing security by deploying dual-view cameras and relocating explosive detection devices to facilitate secondary checks without physically opening bags.

In conclusion, Kuku emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between FAAN and relevant security agencies to optimize airport security protocols. She expressed gratitude for the support received from the NSA in addressing these challenges and reiterated FAAN’s commitment to ensuring passenger safety and satisfaction.
