EFCC Denounces False Claims: Viral List of Ex-Governors Under Investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted a circulating list alleging that 58 former governors are under investigation for corruption, dismissing it as false and misleading. The purported list claimed that these ex-governors were being probed for allegedly misappropriating N2.187 trillion over 25 years.

In response, the EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, clarified that the agency neither released such a list nor engaged in discussions with any media outlet regarding investigations into former governors. He labeled the list a “disingenuous fabrication” aimed at undisclosed motives.

The EFCC emphasized the importance of disregarding false reports and urged media practitioners to verify information directly with the Commission to prevent disseminating inaccurate and misleading information.

While the EFCC has been investigating several former governors over corruption allegations, including Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, the agency stressed that the specific list in circulation is not authentic. Bello has been arraigned on multiple counts related to money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds amounting to N80.2 billion. One notable accusation against Bello involves the withdrawal of $720,000 from the state’s accounts for advance payment of his child’s school fees shortly before leaving office in January 2024.

The EFCC’s ongoing probe of former Governor Yahaya Bello underscores its commitment to combating corruption and ensuring accountability in public office. However, it’s important to note that the agency has not released any comprehensive list of ex-governors under investigation.

The EFCC’s statement reminds the public and the media to exercise caution and verify information before disseminating it, particularly when it pertains to sensitive matters such as ongoing investigations and allegations of corruption.

While corruption remains a significant challenge in Nigeria, efforts by institutions like the EFCC are crucial in holding public officials accountable and promoting transparency and integrity in governance.
