Cameroon Minister Stands Firm on National Coach Appointment

In Yaoundé, Cameroon, the Minister of Sports has defended the appointment of a new national soccer team coach in response to criticism from the national football federation (FECAFOOT). The appointment of Belgian Marc Brys as the new coach of the Indomitable Lions was made by the Ministry without consulting FECAFOOT, prompting the federation to express surprise and concern.

Minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, in a letter seen by Reuters, asserted that the ministry’s decision was made in accordance with both national and international regulations. The letter addressed FECAFOOT’s concerns, emphasizing that the appointment of coaching staff does not infringe upon the federation’s autonomy nor violate any supranational regulations.

FECAFOOT had expressed its intention to seek clarification on the matter, highlighting the potential repercussions of disputes between the government and the federation. FIFA, the global governing body of soccer, strictly prohibits government interference in national federations, which could result in sanctions, including bans from international competitions.

Kombi’s letter also addressed the issue of salary demands by candidates proposed by FECAFOOT, stating that the requested amounts ranged from 1.5 million euros to 2.5 million euros per year. The minister deemed these amounts excessive, noting that they surpass any salaries previously paid to coaches in the history of the Indomitable Lions.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Sports confirmed the authenticity of the letter, while FECAFOOT did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The dispute between the Ministry of Sports and FECAFOOT underscores the challenges of governance and decision-making within Cameroon’s football landscape. As tensions persist, stakeholders will need to navigate carefully to ensure the stability and integrity of the sport in the country.
