Defense Minister Ben Wallace was among those who attended Saturday’s emergency response committee meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, to discuss the situation in Sudan.
Following a week of upheaval that has killed hundreds, the Sudanese army said on Saturday that it has decided to help in the evacuation of foreign nationals as gunfire and air strikes rang out throughout Khartoum.
Diplomats and other foreigners from the United States, Britain, France, and China will be evacuated from Khartoum “in the coming hours,” according to the army.
According to a government spokesman, “We recognize that the situation is extremely concerning for British nationals trapped by the fighting in Sudan.”
The Ministry of Defense is working with the Foreign Office to prepare for a number of scenarios in order to protect British residents and diplomatic personnel in Khartoum.
The British Foreign Office advised on Saturday that “in the event of a ceasefire, any decision to move must be taken at individual risk” as it published amended travel advice for Sudan.
