Bobrisky’s Admission: Plea of Guilty in Naira Abuse Case Rocks Internet

One of Nigeria’s most prominent figures in the entertainment industry, Bobrisky, a transgender woman, has admitted guilt to four charges related to currency abuse. Appearing at the Federal High Court in Lagos, Bobrisky was draped in black attire with a scarf concealing her face.

The allegations against Bobrisky revolve around the act of “spraying” banknotes, a common practice at Nigerian social gatherings such as weddings and celebrations. “Spraying” involves throwing money in the air as a gesture of appreciation. However, this act is technically unlawful as it leads to the notes being trampled upon when they fall to the ground.

While the maximum penalty for this offense is six months’ imprisonment, prosecutions for such cases are infrequent. Bobrisky’s case gained attention after videos of her “spraying” naira banknotes at the premiere of the highly anticipated film “Ajakaju,” produced by actress Eniola Ajao, circulated widely on social media.

The charges against Bobrisky also include similar incidents of currency abuse at various events over the past year. However, the court dismissed two counts of money laundering against her.

In defense of Bobrisky, her lawyer, Ayo Olumofin, emphasized her status as a first-time offender and advocated for fair treatment under the law. He expressed confidence in the judicial process, asserting that justice would prevail.

Meanwhile, Bobrisky remains in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), awaiting further legal proceedings. The case has drawn parallels to a previous incident where actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin received a six-month prison sentence for similar currency abuse, highlighting the seriousness with which such offenses are treated in Nigeria.
