The ANC and the DA Form a Historic Coalition Government in South Africa
In a historic political development, two smaller opposition parties have joined the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and the major opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) to establish a unity government in South Africa. Following the ANC’s first parliamentary majority loss in 30 years in last month’s elections, this historic coalition has emerged.
The ANC received 40% of the vote in the most recent elections, with the DA receiving 22%. A possible coalition has been the subject of conjecture for weeks due to this dramatic change in the political scene. As the National Assembly meets to vote on the presidency, newly elected MPs will be able to confirm Cyril Ramaphosa’s continuation as president, thanks to the deal.

After a fire damaged the parliament complex, the National Assembly will convene at a Cape Town conference center. The significance of the coalition arrangement was highlighted by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, who hailed it as a “remarkable step” towards the formation of a unity government. The coalition’s framework is still being discussed, as Mbalula pointed out, so there is still a lot of work to be done.
There has never been an alliance of this kind between the ANC and the center-right DA. With Nelson Mandela at the helm, the African National Congress (ANC) was instrumental in the fight against apartheid and went on to win South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. Coalition agreement hailed by DA leader John Steenhuisen as “new chapter in our history.” The deal, he said, involves the ANC’s endorsement of DA deputy speaker Annelie Lotriet and Ramaphosa for president. The Patriotic Alliance (PA), which stands for the colored community, and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), which has a strong Zulu base and received 4% of the vote, are also part of the coalition. Stability in the Economy and Reconciliation
Following a contentious election campaign, this coalition is perceived as an effort to promote racial and ethnic harmony. The coalition does not include the nationalization-supporting Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) or the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party of former president Jacob Zuma.
President Ramaphosa saw the DA and the IFP as the most dependable allies to tackle South Africa’s infrastructural problems and economic crisis, even if there were disagreements within the ANC about collaborating with the DA. Nevertheless, the alliance has considerable challenges, such as the DA’s rejection of the ANC’s welfare state programs, which encompass a publicly financed healthcare system and policies aimed at empowering Black economic actors.
Future Obstacles
A unified government is within reach thanks to the alliance, but DA leader Steenhuisen conceded that South Africa’s long-standing problems, such as economic instability and crime, will not go away soon. Although the “road ahead will be difficult,” he insisted that one must persist in order to overcome obstacles.
