Over the past weeks, tensions have surged in Tigray as the federal government clashed with the regional. A recent attack on the military base stationed in Tigray triggered the tensions. Prime Minister Abiy alleged that the Tigray People’s Liberation Party had a role to play in the attack. He claimed that the attackers had stolen ammunitions from the camp and captured it.
He then declared a state of emergency in the region and sent government troops staging a military confrontation. The war between the regional forces and the federal government saw an escalation in tensions in the Northernmost region of Ethiopia. The conflict spilled to the borders of the countries neighboring Tigray. Amhara soldiers teamed up with the federal forces in the fight against Tigray forces. The military had launched air bombs in the region to destroy the ammunition. Mr. Abiy had warned the residents to stay indoors amid the attacks.
The Northernmost region of Ethiopia forces in response claimed they had modern weapons, despite the federal government destroying the ammunitions in the military base. Most of the occupants of Tigray fled their homes amid the chaos to neighboring countries. During the war, Amhara soldiers had sustained many injuries. Meanwhile, their community members had set up blood donation camps hoping to save their brothers. The chaos also resulted in the death of many people. The few who have remained in the region are living in fear.
Prime Minister Abiy urged the residents to stay united as the government was doing all it could to protect the country.
African Union Intervenes
The rivalry between Abiy and the Tigray leaders has been the major cause of insecurity in Ethiopia. However, the Federal government claims the Tigray People’s Liberation Party is responsible for starting all the confrontations.
On Tuesday, the African Union called on the Ethiopian government to end conflicts in the northern Tigray region of Ethiopia. This statement preceded escalating tensions in the region. It was on Monday when Moussa Faki Mahamat, head of AU, publicly expressed his concerns over the escalation of military concerns in the region. He encouraged all the parties to dialogue and find a peaceful solution in the country’s interest.
In a tweet, Seifesilassie Gebremeskel stated that Haileselassie, Mengistu, and now Abiy Ahmed have all bombed Tigray. What is the solution for Tigray mothers to raise their children peacefully without being disrupted and murdered? It is about time to come up with a permanent solution.
What’s Abiy Resolution?
Prime Minister Abiy’s reluctance to engage in a dialogue with the Tigray leaders could lead to civil war in the country. Mr. Abiy is certain and confident his administration will resolve the situation in Tigray. In a tweet, he said:
“Our law enforcement operations in Tigray are proceeding as planned. Operations will cease as soon as the criminal junta is disarmed, legitimate administration in the region restored, and fugitives apprehended and brought to justice, all of them rapidly coming within reach.”
Meanwhile, laureate Ahmedy, who deployed the military on 4th November following the attack on the military base, assured the people the operations would end successfully.
