Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa Caps Off “Perfect Week” with Goal in Win over Wolves

Ezri Konsa capped off what he described as a “perfect week” by scoring in Aston Villa’s crucial win over Wolves, helping his team maintain a three-point lead over Tottenham Hotspur in the race for Champions League qualification.

Despite Spurs briefly overtaking Villa earlier in the day with a victory over Luton, Unai Emery’s side responded well to the pressure and secured a vital win, even though their performance was not at its best.

The opening goal came from Moussa Diaby, whose powerful shot from the edge of the area found its way past Wolves’ defenders and goalkeeper, giving Villa the lead. Konsa then sealed the victory with a slightly misdirected cross that ended up drifting into the net off the far post.

For Konsa, it was the culmination of an exceptional week that saw him make his debut for the England national team and earn his first senior international start, showcasing his potential for inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.

Reflecting on his achievements, Konsa expressed his delight, stating, “It’s been a perfect week.” He emphasized his desire to continue working hard and learning, underscoring his commitment to improvement.

Regarding his goal, Konsa humorously remarked, “Yeah, I meant it!” before admitting that he was actually attempting to set up a teammate with his cross. Nevertheless, the fortuitous goal proved crucial in securing the victory for Villa.

However, there was concern for Villa as Ollie Watkins was forced off with a hamstring injury at halftime, with Emery confirming that he would undergo further assessment.

Despite not being at their best, Villa’s ability to grind out results highlights their growing maturity and resilience. With crucial matches ahead, including a showdown with Tottenham, Villa will look to maintain their momentum in the race for a top-four finish.

Meanwhile, Wolves’ lack of squad depth was evident as they struggled to create meaningful chances, ultimately suffering their third defeat in four games. Manager Gary O’Neil will need to address their shortcomings to avoid further setbacks in their campaign.
