Box Office Triumph: ‘One Love’ Holds No. 1 Position for Second Consecutive Week
For the second consecutive week, the biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” has defied expectations, securing the top spot at the box office. Surpassing two debut films and Sony’s “Madame Web,” the Paramount film, starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, generated $13.5 million during its second week of release. The musical biopic, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, has proven to be a success story, grossing nearly $72 million domestically in North America, surpassing its production cost of $70 million.
The film focuses on the legendary Rastafarian Bob Marley’s story during the creation of his 1977 album “Exodus” and leading up to his impactful concert in Jamaica. Despite the fact that some of Marley’s greatest hits were released nearly 50 years ago, the film has resonated with audiences.
“Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba—To the Hashira Training” claimed the second spot, debuting with $11.5 million. This Japanese anime installment from Crunchyroll and Sony achieved an impressive opening despite being shown in fewer locations (1,949) compared to “One Love.”
Placing third at the box office was “Ordinary Angels,” a faith-based film by Lionsgate starring Hilary Swank, which earned an estimated $6.5 million.
“Madame Web,” a superhero movie, continued to struggle, grossing just $6 million in its second week and reaching a total of slightly more than $35 million. Despite high expectations, the Spider-Man spinoff failed to meet anticipated numbers, even with Dakota Johnson in the lead role.
Universal’s animated film “Migration” secured the fifth spot with $3 million after its 10th weekend, bringing its domestic total to $120 million. “Argylle” came in sixth with $2.8 million, slightly ahead of “Wonka,” which earned $2.5 million. The musical “Wonka,” directed by Paul King and starring Timothée Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka, has grossed over $214 million after 11 weeks.
The new entry “Drive-Away Dolls,” directed by Ethan Coen, debuted in eighth place with $2.4 million, preceding “The Beekeeper” and “The Chosen” season four, a Christian series centered around Jesus Christ.
While the past week was characterized as slow, anticipation is building for the highly awaited “Dune: Part Two” next week, which is expected to bring a significant boost to box office numbers and potentially end the reign of “One Love” at the top spot.
