Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo Corp. (8053.T) and Kenyan telecom provider Safaricom (SCOM.NR) announced on Wednesday the creation of a platform to support new businesses.
In the past, startups saw African nations like Kenya as the next big thing, particularly in the technology industry. However, entrepreneurs faced challenges, including inadequate funding and inappropriate marketing tactics.
According to studies, Kenyan business owners face significant obstacles; according to a statement from Safaricom, the country’s startup survival rate is only 30%.
M-Pesa Africa has joined both firms in the initiative known as Spark Accelerator, they said. M-Pesa Africa manages Safaricom’s M-Pesa mobile financial services platform.
Sixty million people and 3 million companies use M-Pesa, a mobile money transfer and payment app that lets users send and receive money, pay for products and services, save money, and even take out small loans.
“We are confident that this acceleration program will help startups add value to this ecosystem,” M-Pesa Africa’s managing director, Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, stated.
According to Katsuya Kashiki, general manager of Sumitomo’s intelligent communications platform business, the platform seeks to enhance important African industries.
The corporations refrained from revealing the extent of their investment in the platform. There are no geographical restrictions on the joint venture between Sumitomo and Safaricom. This relationship has a significant influence on the global startup ecosystem by expanding its reach outside Kenya. The economies of the participating nations, as well as entrepreneurs, gain when creative ideas and enterprises take off.
