Even though the government had lifted a curfew that had been enforced as a result of an attack on a military barracks, the streets of Sierra Leone’s central city, Freetown, were still virtually deserted when the day began on Monday.
During the early hours of Sunday morning, “renegade soldiers” made an effort to break into a military armory in Freetown. According to the government, security personnel were successful in thwarting this attempt.
On Sunday, unknown perpetrators also attacked a police station and freed convicts from a big jail. Both of these events took place.
Since President Julius Maada Bio was re-elected in June, tensions have been high in Sierra Leone. The leading opposition candidate and many foreign allies, including the United States and the European Union, have questioned the legitimacy of the election results.
During his speech to the nation on Sunday, President Bio urged the political and traditional leaders of the West African nation and members of civil society to strive for the preservation of peace.
According to him, the majority of the leaders of the assault on the barracks had been detained, and an investigation was still going on at the time.
On Monday at 6:00 AM, Global Standard Time (GMT), the administration released a statement that urged people to resume their regular activities.
