Ghana must probe on-air journalist assault

In Ghana, a journalist was beaten while reporting live on the radio, and the Ministry of Information has sought an investigation. They have also criticized the behavior and vowed that the police would take swift action in such instances in the future.

On Wednesday, a broadcaster called Abubakari Sadiq Gariba was working for Dagbon FM in the northern Ghanaian city of Tamale when two thugs came into the studio and seized him by the neck.

They threatened him with a slap if he said anything more. The announcer then followed the attackers as they exited the studio.

Despite Gariba’s assurances that he is well, a heated fight erupted outside the studio. He said that one of the men was a regular panelist on his program.

According to the broadcaster, the enraged guy was a local politician who took issue with Gariba’s criticism of his position on a chieftaincy battle in the area.

The Ghana Journalist Association has condemned the attack and filed an official complaint with authorities.
