Authorities in the northern Nigerian state of Kaduna claimed that gunmen kidnapped eight secondary school students on their way home from school, along with an undetermined number of others.
In northwest Nigeria, armed gangs have carried out violent attacks on communities, schools, and motorists, and hundreds have been abducted for ransom.
Monday saw the abduction of eight students from Awon Government Secondary School in Kachia local government area, according to Samuel Aruwan, Kaduna’s commissioner of internal security.
The gang had grabbed the other hostages earlier.
It was unknown where the children were taken, but kidnappers often keep hostages until a ransom is paid in the forests.
“The school administration has provided the names and grades of the students who were taken,” Aruwan claimed.
The next president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, will encounter issues such as a surge in insecurity when he takes office in May.
Because to the continuing Islamist insurgency in the northeast, the Nigerian military is underequipped to cope with bandit kidnapping groups.
