There is now a regional force from the East African Community stationed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is comprised of Ugandan troops.
They would be responsible for the safety of the residents of Bunagana, Kiwanja, and Mabenga. They are all located in the Rutshuru area.
Since June of last year, M23 rebels have been in control of the area. The aim of the military is to guarantee that they depart in a peaceful manner.
The 2,000-strong army will also be responsible for supervising the restoration of economic lines between the town of Bunagana. It is located on the country’s border, and Goma, which is the seat of regional government.
The states that make up the East African Community see the regional force as a local solution to the ongoing conflict in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and this is considered as a crucial step towards the force’s full deployment.
