Kenya Rejects UN Court Jurisdiction ahead of Somalia Border Ruling

[post_slider]

Friday’s report from the national government confirmed that Kenya had rejected the UN’s jurisdiction. The International Court of justice had planned to rule over the border dispute between Somalia and Kenya. The two countries have had long-term disagreements over the Indian ocean extension.

Somalia, have been rough when it comes to negotiations. They were not ready to engage in a polite talk with their neighbors. The stretch of the Indian Ocean is what has brought all these matters into conflict. The stretch is believed to have some gas and oil minerals. Therefore, each country tries to extend its part to grab the whole region.

Kenya’s foreign minister said the country was among the few who decided to withdraw its recognition from the UN court.

In March, Kenya urged the Hague-based tribunal to extend the delay in the case for a certain period. But the ICJ did not put into consideration what the nation demanded. So, Kenya announced that it will boycott the courts hearing. Next week on Tuesday, the Hague will deliver their final rulings.

The ministry of foreign affairs in Kenya tweeted the following today: ’ 2/4 Kenya on September 24, 2021, joined other members of the UN in withdrawing its recognition of the International Court of Justice compulsory jurisdiction. ‘As a sovereign nation, Kenya shall no longer be subjected to an international court or tribunal without its express consent.”

The minister went ahead to comment on the same issue on his tweeter account ‘4/4 Every Kenyan is to be assured that the Government is fully seized of this matter. Kenyans are therefore called upon to remain calm before, during, and after the delivery of the Judgment.’

The foreign minister condemned the court for being inherently bias in solving some matters. He proceeded that the delivery of this judgment will hurt their sides because they withdraw from the court.

No country should be forced to report to the International court unwillingly. It’s unlawful. Kenya is a sovereign nation that, like other European nations, needs full freedom.

Kenya’s northeastern neighbors want to extend their Indian ocean region across the border. They have already shown signs of taking the whole of the south-eastern section. The Somalis have threatened the Kenyans who live next to the border.

On the other side, Kenya has its demands too. They have asked Somalis to accept a straight line to pass through the eastern region, which will make them poses large portion. The total area under the dispute covers almost 40,000 miles.

The African news went ahead to announce how Kenyan fishermen are terrified at the border. Most of them have protested because their lives are in danger. The tweet went viral on March 16th this year. The Kenyan government had to send its soldiers to defend their land and residents.

The Somali government approached Kenya the same month. They tried solving the dispute with a mediator in between, but it was impossible. Somalia has complained for many years that Kenya is meddling in its territory.

In 2019, Kenya accused Somalia of grabbing territory, extracting and selling oil from the ocean. The Kenyans reminded their neighbors of how they had helped them fight deadly Al-Shabbab.

Truly, Kenya has one of the strongest military powers in Africa. They helped in fighting Al-Qaeda who fought along the Somalia border. In August 2021, the Somalia Prime minister decided to hold a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta. They are yet to announce a final decision.
