Somali president withdraws PM’s powers in escalating row

Mohamed Abdullahi Muhamed, the Somalia president announced about withdrawing his prime minister’s power. The current PM, Mohammed Hussein Roble, was very bitter about this matter. It has led to a country crisis in which the supporters of the prime minister pound near the statehouse.

The president said the prime minister has violated transition constitution law. According to the constitution, the Somalia president went ahead to withdraw all the powers that his PM had.

Such powers include appointing and removing officials. This has to be done until all the people complete voting. The report was announced by Farmajo, a personal speaker from the office of the president.

Political and security stability is one of the core values that the state should put in order. The head of state was very worried about the Prime Minister’s role. He said the PM had taken a funny decision that could lead to instability in the country. Mr. Mohamed Hussein makes his own decisions without consulting the president. There must be a collaboration between those two leaders before making any extra decision.

For several months, the two leaders have had a rough relationship. Even the upper house was in negotiation to hold a meeting about this matter. While recruiting and appointing some new top security officials, the two disagreed. This was 10 days before the relationship got into a worse situation.

It was on 5th September when the PM decided to dismiss the top official of the Security service and intelligence Agency, Mr. Fahad Yasin. The head of intelligence was a close friend of Farmajo, a spokesman. The act came after the head of intelligence conducted a poor investigation. He was not able to disclose what happened to the female officer who disappeared from the statehouse.

The head of state, Mr. Abdullahi overturned the case by calling it illegal and unconstitutional. He was not happy about these decisions. He went ahead and appointed a replacement of his choice. Fahd Yasin was then promoted to a higher rank. He became the security advisor.

The Prime minister has gone ahead to accuse the president of interfering with the investigation. He called the decision harsh and very dangerous for the nation. It was like a threat to the country. The PM went ahead to appoint and replace another security minister within two weeks. This was the breakpoint between him and the resident.

Other politicians have come in to try and seek negotiation but the two parties cannot agree anymore. The Internation Crisis Group (ICG) said that Somalis are joking with fire. This has brought tension between Robie and Farmajo.

Farmajo got the sit in 2017 and his contract ended in early February. He wasn’t in any agreement about the extension. So the role of being in the seat until the election ends was forged. The PM referred to it as a constitutional crisis.

In April, it was announced that his term will be an extension of his term. The deal was to run for another 2 years. It sparked clashes in Mogadishu. It reminded the people about the war that happened in 1991 in the country. Somali citizens don’t want to go to that place again.

Since his appointment in 2020, there have been issues with his leadership. The PM recently agreed about the election dates. Presidential ballots are to be cast on October 10th, 2021.
