Angola Wins the African Women’s Handball Championships

Every two years, the African Handball Nations Championship is held, which is the official competition for Africa’s senior national handball teams. The competition not only crowns African champions but also serves as a qualifier for the Summer Olympics and the World Handball Championship.

Angola Goes International

Angola won the African Women’s Handball Championship for the third time in a row after defeating Cameroon in the final in Yaoundé.

Both countries advanced to the final two days ago at the Yaoundé Multipurpose Sports Complex, with Angola defeating Tunisia in extra time.

Angola had a much easier time in the final, taking a 14-7 halftime advantage. In the second half, Cameroon was unable to close the advantage. Angola won by a score of 25-15 to maintain their African title. Angola’s victory will strengthen their confidence ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where they will be the only African team competing in the women’s event.

Angola will compete in the group stage against Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Montenegro, and South Korea next month.

Tunisia joined Angola and Cameroon on the podium at the African Championships. Tunisia won the bronze medal match against Congo with a score of 22-17.

In yesterday’s fifth-place playoff, Senegal defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 24-14, while Guinea defeated Nigeria 25-21 to finish seventh.

The Cameroonian players blamed their setback on a lack of concentration. “We lacked lucidity,” Maffo Kamga, a Cameroonian center-back, said. “We conceded numerous balls to the opponent and that harmed us.”

Africa will be represented at the World Handball Championship in Spain in December by Angola, Cameroon, Tunisia, and Senegal, which finished fourth.

World Handball Championship

The International Handball Federation will host the 25^th World Women’s Handball Championships in Spain from December 2 to 19, 2021. The IHF stated on October 18, 2018, at a congress in Doha, Qatar, that the World Championship would be increased from 24 to 32 teams starting in 2021. After winning for the first time in 2019, the Netherlands will defend its title.

Angola’s Women Handball Team

The Angola women’s national handball team, nicknamed the Pérolas, represents Angola in international handball competitions. Since 1996, Angola has competed in six editions of the Olympic Games, placing seventh in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016.
