We live in a world whereby corrupt leaders do wrong things and they want to get away with them. The peoples’ voices go through a lot when they bring dark things to light. They may even lose their lives trying to fight for the rights of innocent citizens. The police should protect us but unfortunately, they cooperate with these wrong leaders because they give them little money. The state agent arrest journalist Hopewell at his home.

For example, just a month ago in the United State, there was a case of police brutality that raised voices all over the world. The victim was called George Floyd. A white police officer pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck and suffocated him. This issue of violating human rights is of great concern. People need to come together in large numbers to fight corruption and the dark side of leadership. From human activists to human rights organizations.

Recently, there has been a similar case of human right violation in Zimbabwe after some people arrested a journalist as he voiced out.

Zimbabwean Police Confirm Arrest of the Journalist

The police force had a duty of verifying the arrest of 2 men. They are Hopewell Chinono and an activist called Ngarivhume. State act was linked to claims of breaking section 187 (1) (a) as read with section 37 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law Act.

An assistant police official signed a statement that read:

“The two will make an appearance in court soon and are in police custody.”

The Ministry of Information and Publicity shared the statement on a social media platform

Reason For the Arrest

The state agents arrested the 2 for calling for demonstrations at the end of this month. Earlier, the Zimbabwean government had organized police officers to fight any upcoming demonstrations. The journalist was behind exposing the claimed coronavirus disease procurement fraud involving ex health minister. He is called Obadiah Moyo and he is in court facing charges.

Police Raid Hopewell’s Home

Some officials arrested Hopewell in his home at the capital. According to media, the raid led to the journalist’s apprehension. They broke the journalist’s glass door and entered his house. After they picked him, the police were to verify on what charges did the agents arrest him on.

Reactions On Social Media

There were several reactions from the diplomatic society, human rights organizations, and the citizens of the country. They were demanding the release of the journalist whose voice is of calling the government graft cases.

The Dutch Embassy published:

“Allowing journalists to do their work is important in the battle against corruption. The arrest of Hopewell is part of a concerning trend against free speech in the country.”

The United States Embassy was also involved in the case sending their concerns on the journalist’s well-being. Just like the Dutch Embassy, it said the government should let journalists do their work in fighting corruption.

The activists involved in the fight against corruption should continue with their work and expose the bad leaders. Not until all bad leaders are out of power that countries will achieve the optimal developments.
