Recently, there were protests all over the world after George Floyd lost his life to a white police officer. Just like Nelson Mandela, John Lewis was a human activist who fought for human rights and organized marches whenever there was a case of rights violation.
The Great Achievements Of John Lewis
He was a tough human rights figure. Before his death and his suffering from pancreatic cancer, John Lewis was a lawmaker in the state of Georgia. He also worked in Congress for more than 30 years. Lewis was the planner of the March on Washington DC in 1963, same year Kenya attained its independence.
The civil rights icon was an active participant of the Atlanta City Council before getting a chance to serve in Congress. In 2011, President Barack Obama gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The same year Obama awarded him, he said:
“All these years later, people know him as the Conscience of the US Congress, still speaking his mind on problems of justice and equality. The generations from now, when parents teach their children what is meant by courage, the story of John Lewis will come to mind. An American who knew that change could not wait for some other person or some other time.”
His supporters chose him for a 17th term 2 years ago (2018)
Early Age Achievements
John Lewis started the race of greatness when he was still very young. He was one of the founding participants of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee. The association fought for human rights with protests at voter registration campaigns.
Later, authorities apprehended, jailed, and beat him for questioning Jim Crow laws. Lewis was the youngest in the Big Six Civil Rights heads. The others were King, James Farmer, Wilkins, Philip Randolph, and Whitney Young. John went ahead and planned for a voting right March in Alabama. The march was quite bloody and people know it as the Bloody Sunday after soldiers attacked protesters with tear gas.
Leadership In Congress
People acknowledge him on his works on voting rights. Lewis beefed with president Donald Trump over civil and voting rights. He encouraged his associates to start impeachment activities against the head of state.
It seems Lewis never recognized and liked Trump’s rule in the United States. We see this feud going further to even Lewis shunning away from the launch of a human rights museum in Mississippi as Trump was there.
As the United States is holding its elections on 3rd November this year, we would love to see people practicing what Lewis said on voting rights. The black ought to come out in large numbers to make a change in the US.
