The World Health Organization is an agency of the UN accountable for the globe’s health. It came to existence on 7th April 1948. The main goal for the WHO is to ensure that every human being on earth receives the highest standards of health services. Besides, it should observe health dangers, give technical aid to states, and gather data on world health problems via the WHS. Its headquarters are in Geneva and it has over 100 field offices globally. Currently, it is unsuccessful in finding a vaccine for coronavirus as it holds discussions with various countries in finding a solution.
However, it is successful in finding solutions to some diseases. For example, WHO has eliminated smallpox, polio, and developed a vaccine for Ebola. The agency depends on donations from the member countries for financing.
Equatorial Guinea Fires Its WHO Representative
The World Health Organization Representatives are very important figures in the WHO agency. In addition, they represent various countries by reporting actual health developments in those countries. In the face of the current pandemic, the representatives ought to report coronavirus news updates. These updates involve the number of cases, deaths, recoveries, and active cases. However, some African countries have complained of these representatives reporting false data.
Equatorial Guinea accuses its representative of reporting false national tally of COVID-19 cases. The WHO representative of Equatorial Guinea is called Triphonie Nkurunziza. However, the representative is stuck in the country’s capital because of the border restrictions in different countries. A reliable informer at the United Nations office in the country’s capital gave a statement.
“The government has asked her to leave, we have received a document – the authorities accuse her of falsifying coronavirus figures.”
John Hopkins University reports read that Equatorial Guinea has over 1300 cases, 12 fatalities, and 200 recoveries.
Burundi Sacks Its World Health Organization Representative
Burundi had already fired its representative before Equatorial Guinea did. This happened during the mid-May before the general elections that Evariste Ndayishimiye won with 71% votes. Furthermore, after pictures of political rallies surfaced the social media, the World Health Organization was worried about the overcrowded rallies.
The country wrote a letter indicating Walter Kazadi, WHO representative to Burundi, and 3 other medical experts to leave Burundi. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Africa regional chief, defended Walter saying that the representative is capable of handling the operations. She further says that the World Health Organization wanted to know the reasons behind the country’s hasty decision.
John Nkengasong Opinion On Burundi Sacking WHO Representative
John says that Burundi’s decision was very inappropriate. He advises the leaders that people should solve cases with wisdom instead of taking reckless decisions. John encouraged states to strive in making things right. This is because, during this pandemic time, people need to come together to stop the coronavirus by making wise decisions and cooperating.
“We do not have the luxury of kicking out the World Health Organization. This war has to be won in a coordinated fashion, and coordination is key. We are in dire need of expertise. We encourage countries to do the right thing.”
