The couple had refilled their gas cylinder but found it excessively pressurized. John, therefore, took it to the balcony to normalize the pressure. However, there were clothes on the hanging line during this whole process that absorbed the excess gas which he wore. When he lit the banner in the kitchen, the clothes caught fire. When he realized it, John rushed to the sitting room to his wife for help.

The neighbors were able to respond after realizing what was happening. Ruth and her neighbors were able to put out the fire after a few minutes. They rushed John to the hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU. Ruth had asked some of her friends to help out in fundraising for her husband, for the bills were raising fast gradually. The doctors affirmed that John was out of danger, and he would recover slowly as time passed by. However, things took a turn when he passed on six days after getting out of the ICU.
