30 Africa’s Most Significant Timeline Events

According to history, the 1st proof of the existence of human beings was in Africa. This is enough history to tell one that Africa has a large and wide history apart from what most people know. Its history starts way back over 30,000 years ago. We will discuss a brief timeline of the continent’s most noteworthy happenings.

#1 The First Timeline: 40,000 Years Ago

During this moment we have the discovery of Twilight Cave, a late stone age spot on the Mau Escarpment of the Kenyan nation. Researchers found beads made of ostrich eggshells at the place. It marks the 1st journey about mankind’s idea of loveliness or beauty.

#2 20,000 Years AgoAfrican 

Jean de Heinzelin found the Ishango bone in 1960 while adventuring the Belgian Congo. The Belgian discovered the bone in the region of Ishango. De Braucourt found the bone among the remains of people that fished in that region of the continent.

#3 8000 BC

In this period, the African continent portrays the development of human life via the rock arts.

#4 5600 BC

This takes us to the discovery of the Black Mummy. It is the 1st instance of the process of complete mummification in the African region. Mummification is the process of preserving a body after death by drying the flesh of the dead body.

#5 5500 BC

Nabta Playa became a ritual location in the desert area of Ancient Nubia.

#6 3500 BC

There was the discovery of Ta-Seti, an ancient Nubian Empire. It is the 1st sign of ancient civilization in the history of Africa.

#7 3118 BC

There was the discovery of Medu Neter, an Egyptian writing system, and king Menes became the 1st Pharaoh in history.

#8 2560 BC

The ancient Egyptians constructed the Great Pyramid in Kemet.

#9 2558 BC

The construction of the Great Sphinx of Giza commenced. The Great Sphinx is a limestone statue of a lolling sphinx.

#10 2300 BC

The Kerma civilization began at this particular time. The Kerma Empire was an early civilization in Sudan. It prospered from 2500 BC-1500 BC.

#11 2055 BC

Mentuhotep the 2nd reunites Kemet in around 2055 BC.

#12 2000 BC

The Nsibidi writing system took shape in the land of Nigeria. People used the Nsibidi writing to beautify the skin and clothing items.

#13 1900 BC

There was the founding of Dhar Tichitt, one of the earliest ancient African civilizations. The Soninke people are the ones who founded it, and it is composed of over 350 stone masonry settlements.

#14 Between 1650 BC-1504 BC

During this time, various significant events occurred in Africa. Hyksos conquers lower Kemet and then later Ahmose expels the Hyksos and unifies Kemet. In 1504 BC we see Kemet conquering Kush and it becomes a Kingdom.

#15 1355 BC

Queen Kiya popularizes the Nubian wig in this era.

#16 1353 BC

King Akhenaten advances the earliest form of monotheism. He brought the idea of a single Supreme God; Aten.

#17 1070 BC

The Empire of Kush rises. It was an ancient Empire in Nubia centered along the Nile Valley.

#18 1000 BC

The ancient Nok culture began to flourish in the region around Nigeria. History describes it as an early sensor of sculptural tradition.

#19 814 BC-800 BC

The Phoenicians founded the ancient city of Carthage in what it is today Tunisia and there was the formation of the Djenne city.

#20 760 BC-656 BC

During this period Kush conquers Kemet and the Kushites develop the Meroitic Script. In 656 BC, Assyria conquers Kemet.

#21 525 BC-519 BC

Persia was victorious at the Battle of Pelusium, and it tried to conquer Kush, but it was unsuccessful.

#22 500 BC

At this particular time, 2 major events happened. There was the development of the Ge’ez script in Ethiopia and the formation of the Garamantes Empire.

#23 202 BC

The formation of the Empire of Numidia occurred.

#24 50 AD-350 AD

Here we find the 1st presence of Christianity in Kush and the Aksumite Kingdom comes into existence. The Aksumite Kingdom was an ancient Empire in Ethiopia. In 300 AD, the Soninke people founded the Ghana empire and in 350 D Aksum destroyed Kush.

#25 647 AD

In this period, there was an Arab invasion in the northern region of Africa and the Arab slave trade began.

#26 720 AD

There is the development of the Script of the Kunbaw priesthood of the Songhai.

#27 Between 1001 AD-1200 AD

There are a lot of Empires forming during this period. The Empires of Great Zimbabwe, Almoravid, Almohad, Abyssinian, Benin, and Ajuran came into existence. In 1100 AD a woman founded Timbuktu, a great city in Mali.

#28 1390 AD-1464 AD

In this period, we get to see some of Africa’s great civilizations. The Kongo Kingdom, Mutapa Empire, and the Songhai Kingdom came into existence.

#29 1509 AD

Christianity becomes the main religion of the Kongo Kingdom.

#30 1585 AD-1670 AD

During this era, we see another rise of great Kingdoms such as the Luba Empire, the Rozvi Kingdom, the Empire of Lunda, and the Ashanti Kingdom.

After this time, the Europeans invaded the African continent, and this is where we get to see colonialism spreading across Africa.
