Officials in South Sudan’s Renk County reported on Monday that 10,000 refugees had entered the country in recent days to flee war between the army and paramilitary groups in Khartoum.
According to Kampong Cham County Commissioner Kak Padiet, 6,500 individuals crossed the border on Saturday, another 3,000 on Sunday, and more were expected on Monday.
According to Dau Aturjong, the military commander in Renk, South Sudanese account for over three-quarters of the arrivals, with the remaining being citizens of Sudan, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda, and Somalia.
Approximately 800,000 South Sudanese refugees currently reside in Sudan. The country gained independence from neighboring North Sudan in 2011.
According to Aturjong, local authorities, and citizens are assisting the immigrants. “Humanitarian organizations have not gone so far.”
The civil war in South Sudan, which lasted from 2013 to 2018, is reported to have killed 400,000 people and displaced another 2 million.
