To stop forced marriage, Nigerian woman sues father

According to local media in northern Nigeria, a 20-year-old woman has sued her father for forcing her into marriage with an unknown man.

Fatima Aliyu’s attorney claimed in a Sharia (Islamic) court in Kaduna state that his client was already in love.

He assured everyone that the mother was not suing the father for personal gain.

According to the deceased father, his parents had already decided on a prospective spouse for their daughter.

While Judge Malam Aiyeku Abdulrahman recognizes a father’s right to choose a husband for his daughter, he rules that forced marriage should be avoided.

He advised the man to be patient with his daughter.

“Allow her to present the person she wants to marry, and if you are pleased with his religion and character, you allow her to get married,” the judge said, according to the Punch.
