On Friday, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced the union between Israel and Sudan. He stated that Sudan had agreed to normalize its relationship with Israel. According to Palestine, the decision to become allies with Israel is a betrayal.
Reunion
Trump, who is contesting for a second term, was the mediator between Sudan and Israel. The two countries reached a consensus and renewed their relationship through a phone call preceded by the incumbent US president. The three countries issued a statement which read:
“The leaders agreed to the normalization of relations between Sudan and Israel and to end the state of belligerence between their nations.”
In a report, President Trump urged Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and other nations to renew their ties with Israel. Removing Sudan from the blacklist and meditating on its behalf is a great achievement for Trump, as it is a way of bringing countries together.
“This will be the third country where we’re doing this–and we have many, many more coming,” Trump said.
Sudan is the third Arab state to normalize its relationship with Israel. It comes after the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. According to UAE, the renewal of their relationship with Israel is a great opportunity for them to enhance their security and growth. However, on Friday, Sudan’s acting foreign minister stated that they will decide the agreement after the completion of constitutional institutions. i.e. Sudan would form a legal council that would then carry forward with the decision.
Sudan’s new assembly will comprise members of the transition government. This is because the country established a power-sharing government where both the military and the civilians have a say. These two parties have been ruling the country since 2019, after the toppling of Omar Albashir.
Stab in The Back
Wasel Abu Youssef, an official of the Palestine Liberation Organization, criticized Sudan for their deal with Israel. He said that the act symbolized a stab in the back for Palestinians and a betrayal of the just Palestinian course. He added that the African state’s decision to follow the UAE and Bahrain will not shake the Palestinians’ faith in their cause and in continuing their struggle.
Political Move
Trump’s decision to unite Arab and Israel states is rather a political move. Commentators assume he wants to end Israel -Palestinian conflict to be acknowledged as the deal of the century. This could work in his favor as the presidential elections are approaching. Especially when he gets support from former US presidents.
During a press briefing at the white house, Netanyahu acknowledged Trump’s effort to bring peace to the country. He said that they were grateful for anything that would bring peace to the US. Netanyahu appreciated President Trump for making large steps to promote peace.
Trump’s decision to lift Sudan from the list of terror sponsor countries paved way for their partnership with Israel. Though according to the opinion polls on presidential elections, Joe Biden, the opposition leader, is ahead.
