Food aid from the United Nations World Food Program has been reduced by half due to a dearth of financing. Uganda hosts more refugees than any other country in Africa.
Konga, a single mother of six, has lived in Uganda for six years. She is now wholly reliant on the maize, cassava, and salad vegetables she cultivates in her small garden. She claims that she will find it difficult to adjust to the policy transition.
Konga is concerned that she won’t be able to cultivate enough additional food to sell in order to send her two nieces to school and purchase necessities such as detergent.
Due to a dearth of land, it will take me more than three years to become self-sufficient, she remarked. I lack the strength to stand on my own without assistance.
WFP reports that those in greatest need, such as new arrivals, the unwell, and the elderly, will continue to receive emergency food assistance, but others will be weaned off of it due to a $180 million funding shortfall.
Marcus Prior, country director of WFP Uganda, stated, “Donors must make extremely difficult decisions due to the magnitude of global requirements.”
Konga reported that the rains have been amazing thus far, but she is concerned about surviving the time between harvests.
She highlighted the fact that “we are not yet stable.” If nothing else, please provide us with sustenance so that we can plan our next move.
