According to a statement made by a local police spokeswoman on Wednesday, Nigerian authorities were able to retrieve 14 dead and rescue 21 persons after a boat accident in the northwestern part of the state of Sokoto.
Sanusi Abubakar, a spokeswoman for the Sokoto police department, stated that the wooden boat overturned on Tuesday while attempting to cross a river in the Shagari region. The boat was carrying 36 persons, most of whom were women.
There was still one person that had not been found.
According to locals, the ladies were on their way to a nearby woodland to collect firewood when the tragedy occurred.
The majority of accidents that occur on Nigeria’s waterways are brought on by overcrowding and a lack of proper boat upkeep.
