As coronavirus continues to spread across the globe, governments are trying their best to protect their citizens. The global community is working to slow down the rate of spread of the pandemic because the virus is spreading at an alarming rate. With support from the world health organization, the world can see how far Africans are going with a big fight. This article provides a highlight of updates regarding the pandemic where Lagos makes mask wearing compulsory for their citizens.

The governor of Lagos makes masks wearing compulsory

Although this disease is sickening tens of thousands of people and claiming thousands of lives, the global health authorities across Africa are striving to contain the infection. Lagos State is the economic capital of Nigeria. The Governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the wearing of masks compulsory in the state. This is because of the rapidly spreading virus that is giving people panic across the globe. Making wearing masks compulsory is to keep the citizens safe and to help fight the virus. The 20 million inhabitants are now in direct orders to wear masks.

Nigeria records a total number of 35 deaths and 1182 coronavirus cases. Lagos and Abuja capitals were placed in total containment since the end of march up to now. A lot of people are expecting president Buhari to extent containment at any time. The decision to lift or extend the containment period was to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The governor of Lagos placed orders that whoever violates the wearing of masks compulsion will suffer penalties and sanctions. Because of this, he expects people to obey orders and help stop the spread of coronavirus disease.

The governor announced that arrangements are in motion on mass production of masks that will be able to sustain the people of Lagos. While giving out his speech, the governor stressed the importance of the private sector in the fight against COVID-19.

Protecting Lagos

In his tweet on Sunday, the governor made it clear that the Lagos State Government is currently producing 3 million facemasks that are distributed to the vulnerable population in the state. Because of this everyone should be responsible and observe the guidelines for protection against coronavirus.

“Dear Lagosians, even as we observe the lockdown, we are kicking off #MaskUpLagos; the COMPULSORY wearing of face masks in Lagos helps to protect us from droplets and secretions from coughing, sneezing, etc. as not everyone infected will show symptoms,” he tweeted.

He further urged Nigerians to take the virus seriously because it is already in their community and they can only fight it by protecting themselves.

Africa’s updates

Africa remains the region with the smallest number of coronavirus cases in the world. Africa records a total of 1330 deaths and more than 29000 coronavirus cases. This is quite a smaller number in comparison to the records in other continents.

Algeria and Egypt are the leading African countries with the largest number of COVID-19 cases. In Algeria, there are a total number of 419 deaths, and more than 3200 confirmed cases. Egypt records 307 deaths and more than 4300 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Infected countries in Africa are struggling to fight against the virus. This is because of inadequate facilities to help in facilitating the situation, lack of financial support as well as essential materials for the prevention of coronavirus disease.
