Innovative Opportunities COVID-19 Has Created

COVID-19 has created many innovative opportunities for Tech Companies. The world is feeling the effect of the outbreak caused by the novel coronavirus. Due to the impact of the outbreak, we have seen innovative ideas created to combat it. This idea has created several opportunities for technology companies. Here are the lists of innovations developed during the outbreak.

Grocery Delivery

This event became very paramount during the outbreak, as people no longer have the opportunity to walk outside their environs. Succor.ng was launched last year as a marketplace store comprising of groceries, markets, supermarkets, and restaurants. This platform also allows Nigerian to shop for fresh foods from open-air markets.

The application has in-app logistics services which are known as riders; these riders operate using a ride-hailing business model. The model is designed to pick up orders from vendors and have them delivered to customers efficiently. These riders can also deliver the orders to any customer within the state of operation.

Since the country is on lockdown, businesses like this will see potential increases in marketplace vendors and customers as well. The Senior Executive Operations at Succor, Abiodun Fasakin, says the company now has over 1,000 marketplace vendors on its platform, and orders have seen a 42% increase since the restrictions began.

In South Africa for instance, delivery service One-Cart has recorded a 300% increase in order volumes amidst the 21-day lockdown. There are no doubt companies involved in grocery delivery services will not have an increase in order volume during this period.

Telemedicine and Healthcare

Healthtech companies are surprisingly seeing growth during the outbreak. This innovative service is now in the best position for growth amidst the crisis. The weak African healthcare system can now withstand the surge in coronavirus cases.

“Recently people are beginning to understand the effect of telemedicine being the future of our healthcare system at the end of the pandemic,” says Business Development Executive at Tremendoc, Ifeanyi Nkwonta.

Tremendoc is a telemedicine platform that provides free medical consultation to the bank’s customers during the pandemic. This is done in partnership with Sterling Bank in Nigeria.

She also believes the consumer base will grow during this time. “We expect that our customers and partners see the need especially with the new therapy service.” The platform has two new services of therapy and their fertility consultation delivers a larger base to work on especially on Sterling’s clients.

Remote Learning

Since the outbreak, many schools have been shut down. Learning during this period has been difficult to achieve and sometimes not easy to focus on what is being taught. Schools from Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and more have closed indefinitely and an estimate of over 1-billion learners has been affected. This event has presented an opportunity for digital learning platforms to thrive. There are also tools available for effective studying even with internet access and data costs becoming a hindrance to their adoption.

eLimu and other tech learning institutes are playing a vital role in offering knowledge to users. The learning comes with some free content to users as well as subsidizes rates.  Another platform called uLesson is also a great platform for learning and the platform isn’t much dependent on the internet for availability.

uLesson, eLimu, and more are still looking for ways to subsidize its pricing to accommodate several users. There are also plans to increase the volume of its course content to benefit users.
