GNA Promises to Respond after the Al-Watiya Base Attack
GNA (1)

Since Muammar Gaddafi’s reign, Libya has not been the same. The nation has been experiencing a long-term period of chaos and political instability. The United Nations decided to form an interim government called the Government of National Accord to help establish peace in the state. However, there was the Haftar’s Libyan National Army that was trying to gain territory and dominance in the state. This resulted in having 2 authorities that were competing against one another, which is the GNA and the LNA.

Egypt, Russia, and UAE were forces that backed up or supported Haftar. Recently, the LNA rivals withdrew from the southern capital and the west of Libya after defeats to the GNA. Turkish forces aided the GNA to turn back the LNA using air raids that aimed at Haftar’s troops or forces. In the meantime, Turkey was having talks with the GNA to build military bases in the country that one happened to be Al-Watiya. Not so long ago, there were surprise air attacks at the base. This might be the start of a long war against the GNA and suspect Haftar.

The GNA Responds

After the attack, the UN-based government condemned the attacks against the military airbase. Unknown air force planes are suspected to be the source of the attacks. The good news is that no one died of the attacks. It seems that these attacks were just but a distraction. The airbase had just been recently recaptured from troops in connection with Haftar after continuous battles.

Salah Al-Namrush Views

Salah is the Government of National Accord Deputy Defense Minister. He says:

“A foreign air force in aid to Haftar is responsible for the air raids last night against the Al-Watiya base. The attack seems to be a miserable and desperate attempt to achieve a morale-boosting victory.”

The Defense Minister says that the GNA will respond at the right time if need be. Salah further says that the air raids were to divert attention from the GNA’s achievements. Al-Namrush did not specify the attackers that are behind the air attack. According to sources, the attacks seemed to aim at Turkish military bases or its defense system.

What Next For Libya?

As the Government of National Accord and the Libyan National Army are assembling armies at the front lines of Misrata and Sirte, how will Libya progress? Besides the chaos in Libya, the country also has a burden of the coronavirus to carry. The attacks in Libya have damaged the healthcare system of the country and the WHO calls for immediate medical strategy in the country to cope with the virus. The country has over 1000 cases and over 30 fatalities.

It would be better for Libya to hold on first to their beef and focus on curbing the spread of the virus. Afterward, these 2 rivals need to sit together and solve the issue at hand in a peaceful way to encourage prosperity in the state. More wars and attacks would not help the country.
