"I know that already the election is not free and fair," Bobi Wine reported. "I have survived two assassination attempts in the last two weeks where bullets have been shot at my car and on the tires and at the windscreens."

Bobi Wine said the police fired through his car windshield on December 1 as he wanted to cross a roadblock. The Ugandan State House did not respond promptly to the call for comments. The current President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in control for over 30 years, is competing against Wine for the presidency. The singer accused Museveni of tyranny and human rights violations. At least 45 deaths occurred last month in riots triggered by Wine's detention because he had violated COVID-19 restrictions during campaign rallies.

Although authorities have confirmed that they must apply the restrictions to avoid COVID-19 spread, opposition figures and their followers say that is an excuse to stop their campaigns before the elections. Eyewitness accounts at the time said in crowded urban neighborhoods, the police, the military, and civil gunmen shot high-caliber rifles to squander demonstrations. They supported these allegations by many videos that were posted after the turmoil on media platforms.

Bobi Wine Calls on International Help

Wine requested the United States and the international community to cease collaborating with Uganda until the alleged human rights violations have been halted by President Museveni. Each year the US supplies Uganda with 970 million dollars for growth and defense. The aim of the funding includes, according to a State Department paper, "professionalization of the military" and "supporting democratic governance through inclusive, accountable institutions,"

"We know that the United States has a very strong partnership with Uganda. We receive over $100 million a year for our security. But, again, this is the same money that is being used to murder people, oppress Ugandans and to abuse human rights," Bobi Wine told CNN.

President Museveni has proclaimed that Bobi Wine is "waging war" on Uganda by urging western countries to refrain from investing in the East African republic. On several occasions, most significantly in 2014, the White House has welcomed Museveni. Museveni said in 2018 that President Donald Trump "speaks to Africans frankly". Donald Trump allegedly identified several African countries and elsewhere as "sh**hole countries.
"Mr. Bobi Wine went to America and said that people should not come and invest in Uganda. That means he is an enemy of progress in Uganda," President Museveni said in an interview with the BBC last year.

Bobi Wine said in a Monday tweet: he sometimes had to sleep in the car because the hotels were frequently told not to accommodate him or his campaign staff.
"We are only going into this election as a protest vote. We know that the people of Uganda, even amid the intimidation, and the harassment, will come out and massively vote. And yes, I'm sure they are going to vote out President Museveni because 35 years is just enough," Wine said on Monday.

MORE:

The center teaches mindfulness meditation, a way of reclaiming inner potential for a more decent and mindful life.

Bhante’s mission is to spread Dhamma in Africa. He intends to do this by training 54 novices, one for every African Country.

Journey to becoming a Monk

Steven Jemba Kabagoza, Bhante’s initial name, was born in 1966 in, Buganda region, Uganda. Having been born in a Catholic home, he was a Christian in his early life. He says that he was a vegetarian, and as a young boy, he secluded himself by staying in the house.

In 1990, he went to Punjab University, India, courtesy of an exchange program between Uganda and India, to study business. While in India, he developed an interest in meditation and a desire to explore new lifeways. This drove him to start learning Buddhism and meditation. During his quest, he joined a youth society and volunteered in a speech organization, making him continue growing in Buddhism.

In 1999, Bhante went to Insight Meditation Society, Massachusetts, USA, for a three-month meditation program. As a result, he grew more interested and concluded that this was the path he would take. Consequently, he went to California and was ordained.

His ordination was Tathagata Meditation Center, San Jose, California, by the late Venerable U Silananda in 2002. After his ordination, he spent eight years at the Bhavana Society, West Virginia, guided by Bhante Henepola Gunarantana.

MORE:

Due to this, Buddhism in the continent is growing at a slow rate.

Bhante attributes the delayed establishment of the Buddhist culture in Africa to the fact that a Buddhist state colonized no African country. If the opposite were to happen, Buddhism would have long found its way into the continent. He adds that Buddhists first came to Africa in 1925 to build the East African Railway.

Due to the lack of African Monks, he has made training 54 monks, each for the 54 African states, his lifetime project. Consequently, he established the Uganda based Buddhist center in 2005.

Mindfulness Meditation

He believes that mindfulness meditation, which is part of Buddhism, will ease the suffering of Ugandans and Africans at large. Hence, he has been imparting the knowledge of mindfulness meditation in the African continent since 2005.

His current quest is to try to use meditation to heal cross-generational trauma. He describes most people as traumatized. Moreover, he states that Africa has “colonial hangovers” and a lot going on.

His way

Buddharakkhita teaches Buddhism through humanitarian services and meditation. He has impacted 1,500 locals by providing education, introducing a peace school, and providing clean water to the surrounding community.

He is also researching how best to spread Buddhism in the African culture. Through his research, he has published books for reference purposes. Some of his books include Attempted Murder of a Buddhist Monk: Tales and Trials of Planting Dhamma Seeds in Africa and Planting Dhamma Seeds: The Emergence of Buddhism in Africa.

Kabaoggoza’s other book, Sowing Seeds of Peace: Mindfulness Meditation for Finding Peace Within, guides a daily meditation for a greater self-understanding. He hopes people explore new opportunities for understanding and wisdom.
Idi Amin was a former president of Uganda. He was born in 1925 in Kokobo, in the West Nile Province, Uganda. In January 1971, Idi Amin overthrew the government of Milton Obote and declared himself president. Obote had led Uganda to independence from Britain in 1962 and became their first elected leader.
During his tenure, Idi Amin lived lavishly and ruined Uganda's economy. He committed a lot of human rights crimes, including mass killings. He tried to remain in power at all costs but was overthrown in 1979. After he was ousted, he escaped to Libya and later died in Saudi Arabia.

Early Years

Amin was born in Koboko. His father hailed from Kakwa while his mother hailed from Lugbara. His parents were members of the small Kakwa ethnic group of Uganda. His birthdate is unconfirmed, but many believe he was born in 1925. His mother raised him as a single mom after his father left the family. He had little or no formal education and joined the British army as a cook in 1946.

Military Service

Idi Amin rose through the military ranks quickly. He stood six feet, four inches tall. He was a former boxing champion. He was noted for his overzealous and cruel military interrogations. He rose to the highest rank possible for a Black African in the British army. Between 1952 and 1956, he served in the British action against the Mau Mau revolt in Kenya. Before Uganda’s independence in 1962, Amin became a close friend of Uganda’s prime minister and president, Milton Obote.

Idi Amin: Rise to power

Idi Amin put off elections for five years and elevated himself from a major general to general. He made a declaration when he seized power.

Idi Amin started his rule with actions that many approved, including the release of several political prisoners. On the contrary, he also sent out squads to clamp down on Obote’s supporters. These were mostly people from the Acholi and Lango ethnic groups, military personnel, and civilians. Soon, he included people of every order and rank. These included journalists, lawyers, homosexuals, students, and bureaucrats.

Amin’s tenure lasted eight years from 1971 to 1979. His tenure was marked with brutality, with hundreds of thousands of civilians killed. He expelled tens of thousands of Indians, Pakistanis, and all Asians in general. This led to the breakdown of the country’s economy.
Idi Amin was known as the “Butcher of Uganda.” In July 1976, he was involved in the hijack of a French airliner to Entebbe. In an attack on Tanzania. Tanzanian troops overpowered the Ugandan army, and Amin had to escape. He fled to Libya on April 13, 1979. Eventually, he settled in Saudi Arabia.

Death

On August 16, 2003, Amin died. He died in Saudi Arabia after he suffered multiple organ failure. He was buried there as well.

MORE:
