Boeing Scores Order: Ethiopian Airlines Adds Eight 777X Jets to Fleet
Ethiopian Airlines has inked a deal with Boeing to acquire eight 777-9 widebody jets, with the potential for an additional 12 aircraft orders, as announced in a joint statement on Tuesday. This move reflects a broader trend among major airlines striving to secure orders for fuel-efficient widebody jets, aimed at minimizing operating costs and meeting the escalating demand for international air travel.
Boeing’s 777X program, despite garnering hundreds of orders from airlines globally, has been grappling with significant setbacks, primarily a five-year delay. The company’s challenges have been compounded by heightened scrutiny following a January 5 incident involving a door plug detaching from a new 737 MAX plane mid-flight.
Emirates, the largest purchaser of the 777X, recently raised concerns about potential delays in the program, suggesting that the first delivery might extend into 2026 from the initially projected late 2025 timeline.
In the face of these issues, Ethiopian Airlines’ decision to opt for the 777-9 jets is noteworthy. The airline becomes the first customer for the 777X in Africa, marking a strategic move to bolster its fleet amid plans for growth and fleet renewal. The carrier had previously placed an order in 2023 for 11 787 Dreamliner and 20 737 MAX jets.
The acquisition of the 777-9 jets aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ objectives to enhance its fleet in terms of size, range, and passenger capacity. This expansion is intended to facilitate operations in high-demand markets across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.
As the aviation industry continues to evolve, airlines are keen on securing modern, fuel-efficient aircraft to remain competitive and meet the evolving demands of the global travel landscape. Ethiopian Airlines’ strategic move underscores the airline’s commitment to growth and efficiency, positioning itself as a key player in the dynamic aviation market.
