Amazon (AMZN.O) has officially launched its online shopping service in South Africa, marking a significant challenge to existing online retailers in the region, notably Naspers’ (NPNJn.J) Takealot.com. Analysts have previously highlighted South Africa’s status as Africa’s most advanced economy, making it an attractive entry point for companies seeking to expand.
The timing of Amazon’s entry into the South African market is strategic. It coincides with a notable surge in online shopping spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon.co.za promises a seamless shopping experience, offering same-day and next-day delivery options and a network of over 3,000 pickup points.
