FIFA has sanctioned the national teams of Nigeria and Democratic Republic of the Congo following disciplinary incidents during their 2026 World Cup African play-off in November 2025. Nigeria was fined 1,000 Swiss francs for failing to maintain “order and security” after spectators threw objects during the match, while DR Congo received a 5,000 Swiss franc fine for fans using laser pointers and similar devices.
The play-off, held in Rabat, Morocco, ended 1-1 after extra time, with DR Congo winning 4-3 on penalties, ending Nigeria’s hopes of World Cup qualification for the first time since 2018. In the closing moments, Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle accused DR Congo officials of using voodoo, and the Nigeria Football Federation lodged a formal protest over the eligibility of DR Congo players, citing domestic laws that do not recognise dual citizenship for adults.
Despite the sanctions, DR Congo remains scheduled to play in the intercontinental World Cup play-offs, facing the winner of New Caledonia versus Jamaica on 31 March. The DR Congo squad includes Yoane Wissa, returning from injury, as the Leopards aim to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1974, when they competed under the name Zaire. Up to ten African nations could qualify for the expanded tournament in North America.
