This week Algeria’s Defense Ministry announced the deaths of five people in eastern Algeria. The five individuals died when a homemade bomb exploded on by the roadside in the region. The bomb wounded three other individuals at the scene on Thursday. Algerian authorities said this was the deadliest attack targeting civilians in years.

Five People Killed in their Vehicle in Tabessa Province

The homemade bomb went off as the victims onboard their vehicle drove by in Algeria’s Tabessa Province. Tabessa is located some 573 km (358 miles) from Algeria’s capital, Algiers.

The authorities told reporters the car was being driven through Oued Khenig-Roum, near the district of Telidjane in Tabessa prefecture. Their statement added that they believed that the attack had been executed because authorities had killed an armed group fighter. The Algerian soldiers had killed the fighter in Tabessa’s neighboring region of Khenchela. But no proof has so far been found to make authorities sure that the attack was related to their incident in Khenchela.

In Khenchela prefecture, a detachment of Algeria’s People’s National Armed Forces shot dead a dangerous terrorist. Days later, the ambush in Oued Boudekhane occurred by the roadside. When the soldiers killed the armed fighter, they recovered mobile phones, ammunition, a machine gun, and a radio transmitter during the operation.

Al Qaeda and other Small Armed groups allied to the Islamic State in Algeria

Cases of violence in Algeria are sporadic. The North African country ended a war in the 1990s with armed Islamists bringing peace to the nation. The conflict claimed the lives of 200,000 people.

In 2005 the country formulated a Charter for peace and National Reconciliation that turned the page on the country’s conflict. But al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and small bands of Islamist’s allied to the Islamic State remains active in Algeria’s remote areas. The armed groups have remained active and continue to carry out sporadic operations since the early 1990s. Because of this, the Algerian authorities have branded such groups as terrorists and try to exterminate them.

Algerian Army Operations Over the Year

Over the years, the Algerian authorities have conducted numerous operations to get rid of the armed fighters. For instance, earlier this month, soldiers sent out on a mission killed six fighters in operation. However, three Algerian soldiers lost their lives during the clash that lasted for two days in the west of the country.

In another operation launched by the Algerian soldiers in December, three suspected fighters got killed. The clash occurred in the Jijel region east of Algiers. The armed fighters managed to kill an army staff sergeant during the fighting in the Jijel region. Later on, the army announced it had captured a dangerous terrorist in the Jijel region.

Last year alone, the Algerian army managed to kill 21 fighters. Additionally, the army managed to capture nine fighters while seven armed fighters surrendered to the Algerian army. The military provided these figures in a tally they published earlier this month.
