On Wednesday, the pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol, intending to sabotage the Presidential votes’ tallying process. This incident happened after President Trump addressed his supporters earlier that day and incited them to attack the Capitol. Since his supporters intended to keep him in the White House, they launched the attack, unknown to the Capitol officers. As such, the impact was intense. The lawmakers in the building had to run out for safety.
Officer Dies After Riot
While trying to protect the building, one of the officers, Brian D. Sicknick, sustained severe injuries. He had had physical confrontations with the mob. Therefore, he was a victim of severe beatings. Later that day, upon returning to his division office, he collapsed. His colleagues, therefore, rushed him to the hospital, anticipating a quick recovery. However, according to reports, the man did not make it as he succumbed to the hospital.
Sicknick’s death was a significant loss to the Capitol police force, mostly since he had worked there for about 12 years. Him dying while on duty is a reminder of the bravery of the law enforcement officers of the Capitol. Although Sicknick died a brave man, his death was unjust. Therefore, the Homicide Branch Department of the Metropolitan Police vowed to investigate his death.
Which Events Preceded the Riot?
Despite the tragic incident that happened the previous day, Congress announced that the results were transparent and just on Thursday. Meanwhile, some members of the House sought to surrender their powers. Betsy Devos, an ex-Cabinet secretary, called it quits on Thursday after submitting a resignation letter on Thursday. In the letter, DeVos accused President Trump of inflaming the tensions after failing to concede defeat. She said that President Trump had failed to acknowledge the power of democratic rights and threatened America’s peace. Besides that, she also urged the lawmakers in a farewell letter to protect Trump’s administration and the policies and the President-elect Joe Biden promised to eradicate. Elaine Chao, the Transportation Secretary, also resigned on Thursday.
The two top Democrats in Congress, Schumer, and Pelosi, also called on the Cabinet to invoke the constitution’s 25th amendment to remove President Trump from power. They are considering his impeachment as they think he is currently unfit to continue running the office. This is because they feel Trump can trigger unrest anytime, considering he is desperate to retain his seat.
The Senate Sergeant at Arms, Michael Stenger, also agreed to resign after the previous day’s melee. His resignation came after earlier threats by the Senate Majority leader to fire him. Upon his resignation, the Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, immediately appointed Jennifer Hemingway to be the acting Sergeant at arms for the time being. In a statement, Mitch thanked Jennifer for offering her services when investigating the severe tragedy that transpired the previous day. He said that they would continue to strengthen their preparations for a safe and successful inauguration come January 20th.
Meanwhile, President Trump also agreed to step down peacefully. He also condemned the violent incident that happened on Wednesday and refused the idea that he incited it. In a statement, he said that since Congress had affirmed the results, all he was concerned about was ensuring a smooth, orderly, and seamless transition of power.
