Local media report that the newly created interim administration in Ethiopia’s war-torn Tigray region has appointed a 27-member cabinet.
After the signing of a peace agreement between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), a brutal war in the region has ended.
Getachew Reda, the new president of Tigray, will supposedly be backed by two generals who fought against the Ethiopian army in the last war: Tsakan Gebretensae and Tadesse Werede.
General Tadesse will be responsible for national security and defense, while General Tsadkan will supervise democracy and decentralization.
Although no official announcement has yet been made, the appointments have been heavily publicized by local media.
Two members of the TPLF-aligned opposition organization Baytona have been selected to the new administration.
Mr. Getachew, the TPLF spokesman, was appointed interim leader of Tigray on March 23 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
His predecessor, Debretsion Gebremichael, resigned after almost five years in government.
During his rule, tensions between the municipal and federal governments escalated to the point of violence. It resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.
