Cybersecurity experts and tools are becoming more valuable and in high demand nowadays. But there’s no denying that there’s a shortage of talent to combat security challenges. Agency has hope for some improvement in the cybersecurity industry. Head of Information Security at Kaspersky, Andrey Evdokimov, believes that the problem of the advancement of cybersecurity isn’t necessary the lack of promising or talented young people. He further added that there are roles that need new talent which remains unseen and therefore underemployed.

An interview held with ITNA’s Jenna Delport, Andrey reports that acquiring a career in cybersecurity at the moment is such a good thing. A good specialization can also be chosen and skills developed to fit into the cybersecurity market.

Why there’s a shortage of cybersecurity talent

However, as systems evolve to become sophisticated, threats and tools are also available to compromise data and networks. With this, pressure has been on companies to keep up with recent happenings in the cybersecurity area. New platforms like IoT, Cloud computing, Machine learning, and other software-defined networking are also prone to threats. Also, the skill set needed to manage this platform grows.

Companies have also been slow to rely on security software and hardware to keep sensitive networks running optimally and data safe. Also, there is no such platform available to train students on cybersecurity solutions. By creating or investing in relevant professionals capable of integrating cybersecurity there will be less demand for cybersecurity professionals.

More devices will also be connected to the corporate backend when more software platforms are introduced. And all effort must be in place to keep the user’s document safe and secured. They should also be integrity in data collection and processing.

What are the roles digitalization play in creating a skill gap?

Recently, more organizations are becoming digital, and the introduction of more multi-national data centers in South Africa as seen companies embrace a new way of doing business. There has also been a shift towards a multi-cloud environment. Digitalization has become the benchmark of not only competition but to differentiate from companies from others. These companies range from insurtech, fintech, and other industry sectors.

As of today, strategies and tools available are no longer helpful to protect businesses. There is a need for more tools and skilled-talent to maintain the increment of cyber threats. Even the most sophisticated solutions cannot be helpful without human research, analysis, and operation. Currently, research shows that more jobs are available for cybersecurity professionals than the current supply. Even, corporates and universities have proven not to be able to produce adequate skilled personnel for the digital world.

What are the areas to look out for to start a career in cybersecurity?

Areas to look out can be foundational skill development through graduate and studies programs. Traditional cybersecurity education and certifications can also be an essential platform to understand cybersecurity. In cybersecurity, one can learn how clients, servers, and networks work as well as knowing how cloud environments are transformed. Also, understanding of how exploits, more sophisticated attacks, and firewalls work is helpful.

One must be willing to re-evaluate their skills and also know more updates on recent innovations. As cybersecurity advances, so too must the knowledge of hardware and software required. Certifications are also helpful in supplementing Foundational skill development and Traditional cybersecurity education. Cybersecurity experts can get the opportunity to explore more dynamic areas. Including cybersecurity management, cloud migration, and more as ones technical skill improves.

Besides, there is no way of joining the cybersecurity experts except through self-education and combining elements across ICT platforms. These help to get one prepared for corporate-level skill opportunities.
