The educational system of any developing country plays a vital role in the growth of that state. When a lot of people tend to receive education, they learn skills and have knowledge that may propel a country forward. Moreover, the literacy rates of a country that has more educated people tend to be significantly high.

According to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, the following states have the best educational system in Africa.

 

#1 Namibia

Education in the country is a must for a decade, between ages 6-16. There are over 1800 learning institutions in the state of which only 100 are private schools. The country’s subjects’ syllabus is on the basis of the IGCSE. Its constitution directs the authorities to give free primary education.

 

The government started a 3-year pre-primary education program 12 years ago. It targets at giving youngsters from poor places a chance to the pre-primary education. Compulsory education commences at the primary education stage at 6 years. Primary education comprises more than 5 years (grade 1-7). The secondary education starts from grade 8-12.

 

At the tertiary level, the country has 2 public universities. The Namibia University of Science and Technology and the University of Namibia. It also has 1 private tertiary institution called the International University of Management.

 

#2 Egypt

The public education system in the state consists of the basic education level, secondary school level, and the tertiary stage. Education is mandatory for 9 years between 4-14 years and all stages of education are free within public learning institutions.

 

The Ministry of Education is accountable for making decisions concerning the system with the help of centers. Every center has its main focus in coming up with educational rules with other government level committees. Basic education comprises the pre-primary, primary, and preparatory stages. Secondary education comprises general, technical, and dual-system vocational. Currently, there are over 15 public universities, over 50 public non-universities, and over 12 private tertiary institutions.

 

#3 Cape Verde

Primary school education in the state is compulsory between 6-14 years and free for youngsters between 6-12 years. Over 85% of school children have access to textbooks and the same percentage of teachers have gone to service teacher training. It has literacy rates of up to 80%.

 

#4 Kenya

The education system in Kenya has the primary level, secondary level, and the tertiary level. Currently, it uses the 8-4-4 system but the government was considering changing it later. The country is in the 95th position in the world’s educational system. In primary school, the 1st year is called standard 1 while the final year is standard 8.

At the secondary level, the schools fall into 3 groups. Public schools, private and Harambee. The 1st year is called form 1 and the final one form 4. Students sit for an exam called KCSE before proceeding to the next level according to how one has passed.

Kenya has a total of 48 tertiary institutions. 22 are public while the rest are private universities.

#5 Botswana

Public and private learning institutions provide education in the state. Ministry of Basic Education controls education in the country. A larger percentage of school-going children attend public schools while the rest go to private or get an education while at home.

 

Secondary education in the country is neither free nor mandatory. Its educational stages are preschool, primary education, secondary education, and higher education. Botswana has a literacy rate of over 80%.

#6 Algeria

Education in this country is free and mandatory for citizens between 6-15 years. Over 20% of children are in pre-school. Primary school is for 5 years then students go to 4 years of lower secondary and 3 years of upper secondary. There are over 55 public institutions for higher education. Algeria’s literacy rate is almost 80%.

 

#7 South Africa

The departments of Basic Education and Higher Education and Training govern education in SA. The DBE is responsible for primary and secondary learning institutions whereas the DHET is accountable for tertiary education. The provinces in the country have their education departments that are accountable for executing the laws of the national department. South Africa has a literacy rate of over 90%.

#8 Mauritius

The Ministry of Education and Human Resources manage education in the country. The Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science, Research, and Technology maintains the tertiary education. Its government provides free education to the citizens from pre-primary to tertiary stages. Besides, the authority introduced free transportation for every student. Mauritius is 74th position globally in the world educational system.

 

#9 Tunisia

Education is the most important thing in Tunisia. Its education system is at 71st place globally. Its education system consists of ECE, basic education, secondary education, technical and higher education.

#10 Seychelles

Seychelles is the only African state in the top 50 education systems in the world. Education is mandatory for up to 16 years, and free through secondary school until 18 years.
