Haiti Faces Security Crisis as Gangs Attempt to Seize Control of Main Airport

Heavily armed gangs attempted to seize control of Haiti’s main international airport, Toussaint Louverture International Airport, in a violent attack that involved exchanges of gunfire with police and soldiers. The airport was closed at the time of the assault, with no operational flights or passengers present. An armored truck on the tarmac engaged in gunfire with the gangs, attempting to prevent their entry into the airport grounds. This incident represents the most significant attack on the airport in Haiti’s history.

The assault occurred shortly after authorities in Haiti imposed a nighttime curfew following a weekend of intense violence. Armed gang members had overrun the country’s two largest prisons, resulting in the escape of thousands of inmates. A 72-hour state of emergency was declared to address the crisis, with efforts to locate and apprehend the escaped inmates, many of whom were in pre-trial detention for serious crimes.

Haiti has been grappling with escalating gang violence, with gangs estimated to control up to 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince. These groups have increasingly coordinated their activities and targeted critical government institutions, including the Central Bank. The country’s security forces, particularly the National Police, are overwhelmed and outgunned, facing challenges in maintaining law and order.

The recent violent events, including attacks on state institutions and the international airport, underscore the significant security challenges facing Haiti. The government’s declaration of a state of emergency reflects the severity of the situation, as efforts are made to restore order and address the widespread criminal activity. The incidents also highlight the urgent need for international assistance and support in stabilizing the country and combating the influence of powerful criminal organizations.
